Your questions and my answers

Remember: My answers are only my opinion based on my experiences working as a campsite courier.

Q. Would it be plausible to start work mid season? Or would this greatly reduce my chances of getting work?

A. The short answer is YES it is plausible, although many companies prefer you to start at the beginning of the season, there are positions available thought, I my self did not apply until the end of June. There are also positions that come available due to people leaving or getting the sack.

Q. I have done customer service both one-to-one and over the phone since leaving school so that shouldn’t be a problem, but is there any other skills which I should emphasise in my CV/application?

A. It really depends on what position you apply for although you should do well with your customer experience. A children’s courier would be needed to have experience with children and/or in entertainment. One of the best things you could emphasise on your CV is any cleaning experience you may have had in the past.

Q. Do I need any kind of Visa or anything like that, I have a National insurance number and am a British citizen but is there anything I need to enquire about before working in the EU outside of the UK?

A. Don’t worry, as a national of a European Union (EU) country, you have the right to work in any other member state, without the need of a work permit. You will however need a valid passport.

Q. What kind of wage/days off/accommodation should I be expecting?

A. Depending on the company, you can expect to earn between £80 to £120 per week, this can go up depending on the position (head courier for instance would get more) This would be paid into a UK bank account on a monthly basis. Although it doesn’t sound much, you do not have to pay for accommodation and you will chip in with other couriers for dinner, ect so you should have a fair wack to spend on yourself.

Accommodation - This one is difficult to answer as it really does depend on the company, time of year (out of season you will have a mobile home) and how many people from the same company work on your site. Most likely you will be living in a tent either on your own or with others.

Days Off – You should get at least one full day a week. The thing is it will all mingle into one, you will get time to go to the beach and relax, but most of the time you will be onsite. If you work for a small company and are the only courier onsite, you will have a lot of time on your hands, it just all depends on 1, how many customers are onsite at the time and 2, how many couriers are working on your site.

Q. Am I going to have a great time?

A. I’m not going to dress it up, the job is hard work and sometimes has long hours, but the rewards are immense, imagine working in a place where everyone is on holiday and enjoying themselves! Meeting new people and living in a different culture.

However the job does not suit everyone, some couriers do leave as they didn’t realise what the job is about but most have a great time, they only way to find out is to give it a go.
