Advice for becoming a holiday rep and campsite courier

There are loads jobs you can do working abroad and I have done many. From cleaning the bogs on campsites to a fully fledged holiday rep, head campsite courier right up to Area manager.

I will pass on my knowledge, advice and tips on finding a summer job and how to act in an
interview to get your working holiday abroad. You are welcome to ask me a question or even
post your advice and pass on your knowledge to help those live the life and dream you have.

After receiving questions from you, there seems to be many myths about working abroad,
I will do my best to help you out. Here are some of my best advice & tips on finding and
applying for summer jobs working abroad as campsite couriers or holiday reps:

What does a holiday rep & campsite courier do?

Before you crack on reading advice on becoming a holiday rep, do you know what you would be doing if you got the job?

One of the best questions I found for seeing if someone was suited for the job was to ask that very same question. Those that came up with a good answer always got my attention.

For instance did you know a campsite courier job consists of 90% cleaning! even if you were going for a children's courier or Head courier job, they would expect you to help out with cleaning on busy change over days. How many days off a week do you think you would get?

There is too much to tell you about here, but if you would like to know the inns and outs of each summer job then check out Working as a holiday rep You can always come back to this page later.

Finding the right position for you

There are many jobs available and it best to apply to your strengths, here is a list of a few positions you could apply for: Courier, Head Courier, Senior Courier, Supervisor, Children's Courier, Children's Courier Team Leader, Montage/Demontage Assistant (Tent Erecting and Dismantling) and even Site Manager.

What is the best time to apply?

Although you can send in an application form at anytime, from my experience if you send in your application at the right time you will stand a better chance of an interview.

Personally I would send in 2 applications, the first around Xmas time this will get filled along with the other hundreds of applications but then brought out when they start the "scanning" process (it is very important to get a great CV in, see below) and another around January - May.

This is the important thing to remember: Sending in an application as late as possible, three or so months before the start of the season will get your application form landing on top of the pile!.

How to complete your application form

On every application form they will ask you for a photo, this is very important photo's from past trips to Ibiza don't go down well with the "Old Farts" and try not to have a fag hanging out of your mouth, you would be surprised how many I got.

Any customer relation skills you have no matter how insignificant you think it is will be a greater advantage than speaking a foreign language, if you have worked in a Butchers, Hairdressers or Telephone Sales anything to do with dealing with the public is looked on very highly by the interviewer so make a point of reminding them.

Speaking the lingo

Don't think that you need to speak a foreign language, it can be an advantage but you are going to be working for an English company and 99% of your customers will be English. So don't be afraid to tick the box Conversational on the application form ( if you can order a beer then that's conversational! ; )

Look after your customers

My final and best piece of advice may sound pretty obvious at first glance but is the most important by far.

Your customers can give you an easy life or could make you life hell! it all depends on your ability to be as helpful as possible and be there when you are most needed.

"If you are helpful to your customers most of them will invite you to there BBQ'S or just feed you beer and wine! and when they leave all the stuff they can't be arsed to take with them!" "So out of that £90 every week you should have exactly er.... £90 to spend on BEER! ; )"
